Artist Statement

My work brings an unconventional quality to the utilitarian ceramic world. Every piece is designed to entice the viewer to live in their present moment by altering our familiarity with the object and its intended use; as well as to highlight processes found in nature. I create forms and textures inspired by certain environmental ecologies based on growing methods, water and soil availability, sun exposure, coloration, aging, and interactions with species development in particular areas. I use alternative sculptural approaches to handles, lips, spouts, and feet to cause the viewer to pause and engage with the work closely in order to figure out what it is intended for. It is my hope that by bringing these pieces into our homes to be used, I can remind people of the wildness, presentness, and strength nature possesses so that it can bring it out within all of us. Through the intertwining of obscuring objects we have become accustomed to with a nature inspired theme, I hope to heighten the use of our senses to pay more attention to what is current to ensure we do not become a victim to time. By manipulating our knowledge of what utilitarian objects need to reveal to us, I want to expose how similar we are to nature and the fact that we are indeed not all that different. `
